Discusses his early interest in journalism, his education at Millsaps College during the 1940s, his service in the U.S. Army in Germany, and protests against the Vietnam Conflict on college campuses during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Describes journalism and newspapers in Jackson, Mississippi and considers the influence of newspapers, and specifically editorials, on public opinion.

Mr. Cavett grew up in a small Delta town in Mississippi. He attended Millsaps College and edited the campus newspaper. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he enrolled in Northwestern's School of Journalism. He has worked for newspapers in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi.
